Here at Ninety One we’re all about the music, and for good music to become an excellent experience, it must be paired with a sound system worthy of the name. We’ve asked Ivor Davies, our legendary sound engineer, to tell us about Ninety One’s unique Funktion-One set up and why it’s so special…

The extraordinary loudspeaker system you see at Ninety One is a pair of Funktion One Resolution 2 loudspeaker cabinets mounted on top of a pair of Funktion One F218 MK1 Horn Loaded Bass Units.

The Funktion One company was founded in 1992 by Tony Andrews and John Newsham who were also responsible for founding Turbosound in the 1970s. They were the team behind a number of revolutionary loudspeaker designs including the legendary Turbosound “Floodlight” system which sowed the seeds of what you see here today.

The Funktion One Resolution Series was the culmination of over 6 years of research by Tony and John who also collaborated with Clive West of Fane Acoustics in Yorkshire to develop brand new driver unit designs using the very latest “high flux density” magnet technology available.

The world premiere of this Series was on the night of December 31st 1999 where they were the actual loudspeakers used in the Millenium Dome “New Millenium Experience’s Central Show” (Sound Design: Chris Hey, Design: Mark Fisher, Music: Peter Gabriel)

Following that success, Tony Andrews hand picked a small number of venues to showcase the technology to a wider public. The speakers you see in Ninety One are some of those original units from the year 2000 denoted by the engraved brass plaques on the rear of the speaker cabinets. First installed at 93 Feet East across the road they have been a part of Ninety One Living Room since 2017.”
