Phil Dawson Quartet
About Jazz Lates
Jazz Lates is a series of intimate Jazz events that take place in our wonderful living room. On Saturday 16th March it is with great pleasure that we welcome Phil Dawson Quartet to the living room stage.
About the artist
Phil Dawson is a guitar player known for his collaborations and appearances with London-based roots and groove collectives Lokkhi Terra, Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra, Soothsayers and a host of other Brit jazz and world projects – as well as pan-African originators Tony Allen, Osibisa, Hugh Masekela, Mulatu Astatke and Khaled.
His band features the great Matheus Nova on bass, well known for his work with Antonio Forcione, Ed Motta, Saravah Soul and Jazzinho and Marius Rodrigues, a Brazilian drummer who covers an amazing range of folk, fusion and jazz as well as Brazilian recording projects.
The quartet plays original tunes forged from flavours of Ghanaian hilife, Brazilian baiao and desert blues from Mali as well as jazz references from Jim Hall to Tony Williams to Sonny Sharrock and Pharaoh Sanders.
The band also features the amazing Maurizio Ravalico (percussion – Collocutor, Dele Sosimi, Fiuum Shaarrk) Maurizio’s self-designed sonic universe and openness to free exploration push the band to fully spontaneous musical territory.
