About the artist
The W is a newly established London-based contemporary jazz quartet of outstanding musicality creating chamber jazz that is as exciting and inventive, as it is elegant and sophisticated. Set to be released on Ubuntu Music, Portait is informed by memorable lines, melodic grooves and diverse references.
Portrait is the culmination of three years of writing by award-winning pianist/composer Bruno Heinen. Professor of jazz piano and composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, Bruno is as much a composer as he is a pianist. His compositional path has been one of self-discovery, learning and reflection, with his writing informing his improvising, and visa-versa. As The W’s vocalist, Heidi Vogel brings a contemporary, stylish sound with her extraordinary voice and velvet tone. She brings her wealth of experience to the album as the vocalist for the Cinematic Orchestra for over 15 years and the go-to vocalist for acts such as Thundercat, Soweto Kinch and Chick Corea. On drums is London-based New Yorker Gene Calderazzo, a leading figure on the international jazz scene whose vast portfolio include performances with Pharoah Sanders, Radiohead and Wayne Krantz to name a few. On double bass is Italian Andrea Di Biase who has performed with many leading figures in British jazz such as Stan Sultzman, Norma Winstone and Kenny Wheeler.
Taking to the decks following The W’s performance is music journalist, and broadcaster Ally J Steel. Steel is the Founder and Editor of the digital music platform Jazz Revelations, which focuses on groundbreaking contemporary releases and innovative artists from the jazz world and beyond. Ally also hosts several radio shows on 1020 Radio and Wycombe Sound, and also broadcasts on the national station Jazz FM, where he works.
An experienced DJ, Ally’s wealth of musical knowledge results in an exciting and eclectic mix of jazz-inspired beats, hip hop, electronic music and everything in between.
