About the EFG London Jazz Festival
The EFG London Jazz Festival is the capital’s biggest pan-city music festival, taking place annually in November, which has long been acclaimed for showcasing a heady mix of talent from around the world. Widely acknowledged for delivering world-class artists and emerging stars, the Festival continues to take jazz to a massive audience, in one of UK’s landmark music events. On the 15th November 2019 it is with great pleasure that we welcome Waaju to the living room stage.
Afro-Latin jazz quintet draw influences from cultures across Africa, South America and beyond London based Afro-Latin jazz quintet Waaju believe in highlighting the world’s connection through less familiar creative collaboration. Drawing influence from a number of cultures across Africa, South America & beyond, the band delves deeper to leave behind preconception & promote forces largely unexplored in a Western context. Citing the rich history of Malian music as centrepiece, Waaju presents the vision of drummer & percussionist Ben Brown which draws from the exceptional spirit of the likes of Ali Farka Toure, Oumou Sangare, Tinariwen & Baba Sissoko.
Waaju is a project that never stands still, its members playing in several other ensembles (Caravela, Bahla, Jordan Rakei, and Ashley Henry to name a few), meaning they cherish each time they get to come together to play. Playing music from their highly critically acclaimed 2018 album, “Waaju” (Olindo Records), alongside a selection of new material from their upcoming album set to be released in 2020, join us for an evening of original, new and experimental music of the highest quality from this exceptional young collective.
